Food Crisis in Iraq

By Spencer Ackerman 05/19/2008 02:30PM

Speaking of food crises, Siun at Firedoglake notes -- in a post about Matthis Chiroux -- that Iraq is suffering from serious water and food shortage shortages.

This year’s severe drought is forecast to lower wheat and barely yields in Iraq by up to 35 percent, the Ministry of Planning said. The ministry, in a statement, added that Iraq has been subjected to one of its worst droughts in recent history this year. Wheat and barley yields may not exceed one million tons, the ministry added.

It's amazing -- and disgusting -- that we don't talk about this here in the U.S. You know, Iraq the real country, populated by real Iraqis, whose suffering is real. That, of course, would be rather inconvenient for the war.

The more abstract we can make the lives of Iraqis, the better the chance of continuing the war.
