Influential Lewis Drops Clinton for Obama

By Mike Lillis 02/27/2008 03:54PM

As if things weren't going bad enough for Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, Georgia Rep. John Lewis (D) has dropped his support for the former first lady and instead endorsed rival Barack Obama, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.

Lewis, an influential civil rights leader and 11-term congressman, had been under a microscope for endorsing his friend Clinton even while representing a district largely supportive of Obama. Adding to the pressures, Lewis is a superdelegate, meaning he'll be placing a vote for the Democratic presidential nominee at the party's national convention later in the year.

"It's been a long, hard and difficult struggle to come to where I am now," Lewis told the paper.
