Iraqi Parliamentarian: The U.S. Invasion Led To 'The Destruction Of The Country.'

By Spencer Ackerman 06/04/2008 03:50PM

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) asked a simple-enough question: did the two Iraqi parliamentarians think the U.S. should have invaded? He seemed unprepared for the answer.

"I would prefer if it didn't happen, because it led to the destruction of the country," al-Ulayyan said. "The U.S. got rid of one person. It put in hundreds of persons that are worse than Saddam Hussein. Unfortunately, now Iran is going into Iraq, and this is under the umbrella of the United States."

Asked if the U.S. should withdraw, a somewhat-exasperated Jaberi said, "The presence of foreign forces at this time may not be very useful in Iraq... it will be a source of instability in both Iraq and the region."

Ulayyan added, "It's a well-known fact that an occupying power should keep security and order and stay until it builds forces capable of doing so. There has been a lot of destruction. We have a big, strong army but unfortunately it is infiltrated by militias loyal to Iran. Therefore ... I would like to see a schedule for withdrawal based on a timetable that allows enough time to rebuild the forces and make it stronger."

First to comment? Spencer we need to get more people to your site.

5 years later, the negligence is exceeding epic proportions. Iraq’d indeed.

And the Republicans have a learning disability – unprepared seems like a permanent state for them.

I like the site and would like more daily content. Enjoy your writing on other sites. Now how in the world did this guy get on the air? Don’t the repubs vet their sychophants anymore? It’s like he’s totally “off-message”. Aren’t they puzzled? I wonder if this is the same al-Ulayyan they knew. Doesn’t sound like him.
