Is Fluoride Making You Fat?

By Suemedha Sood 05/19/2008 06:52PM

New findings by the National Research Council could give us all something to worry about. In the first review of its kind, the NRC found that small amounts of fluoride -- you know, the stuff in our water and in our toothpaste -- may present risks to thyroid gland activity. Those small amounts correlate with the amount of fluoride that's added to our tap water.

"Many Americans are exposed to fluoride in the ranges associated with thyroid effects, especially for people with iodine deficiency," says Kathleen Thiessen, co-author of the report.

Low levels of thyroid hormone can cause an increased risk of heart disease, weight gain, higher cholesterol, low blood pressure and depression. About 59 million Americans have thyroid problems.

Maybe…, but I would be willing to bet that inactivity has more to do with it. And poor diets. Everyone is always looking for a scape goat. Kind of like vaccines and autism. So should we stop putting fluoride in our toothpaste and city water to curb thyroid malfunction? Only if we are prepared for the drastic effect it’ll have on our oral health.

Wow—I knew it. The gov’t can conduct mind control and weight control all at the same time with one convenient drug!

No, but seriously, I’ve been trying to lose ten pounds for months now. If only I’d have known I just had to stop drinking water anymore! So, I’ll stick to my big gulp. That’s great!
