McCain Says We Should Go Nuclear

By Suemedha Sood 06/19/2008 04:56PM

Sen. John McCain said today he'd like to see 45 new nuclear reactors be built by 2030 and another 55 built in the long-term. He said the new plants are needed to combat global warming, saying that nuclear plants "spare the atmosphere from the equivalent of nearly all auto emissions in America."

But how much will 45 to 110 new nuclear plants cost to build? Billions upon billions, estimates have shown. That's a hefty price tag standing in the way of a nuclear revival. The only way McCain can give nuclear the support he's been talking about is through subsidies. Although he prides himself on being the candidate who'll cut the federal fat, he does quietly support such energy subsidies.
