Michigan Messenger Gets the Scoop

By Jefferson Morley 05/05/2008 12:40PM

The Washington Post reported yesterday on the controversial development project that has divided Benton Harbor, Michigan's poorest city. The story is attracting national attention because the project's wealthy backers are seeking to take over 22 acres of a waterfront park belonging to the mostly black city to create a luxury housing development and private golf course.

But the Post's story missed the scoop reported Friday by TWI's sister site, Michigan Messenger: that two prominent backers of the project, Republican Congressman Fred Upton and Whirlpool CEO Jeff Fettig would gain easy access to the private golf course because they live right down the street. The Messenger has been covering the story since last October.

So a bunch of wealthy whites want to throw blacks out of their homes to pave the way for a new gold course. Sure it might increase land values, but now where are all those families going to live? The thing that surprises me is that people, predominately white, wonder why black folks, like Jeremiah Wright, are so pissed.

Too bad they didn’t have a hurricane to do the dirty work for them.
