More Stimulating Ideas

By Mary Kane 05/20/2008 01:30PM

This group describes injuries, scarring and deaths from burns as "the forgotten global health crisis." In many poor countries, burns affect more people than AIDS, malaria, or tuberculosis. Those disfigured by burns are outcasts. The group provides free reconstructive surgeries. NPR recently reported on increasing numbers of women in Sri Lanka killed or scarred by fire. Some burned themselves deliberately to escape abuse from their husbands or boyfriends. This problem hasn't gotten much attention. There's a photo gallery with the NPR site that shows why it deserves to.
