State of Play: iPhone Fever

By Jessica Pearce 07/11/2008 11:00AM

Apple released the new iPhone today to long lines of gadget-loving, though impatient customers. When I walked by a line of 50+ people waiting outside an AT&T store in Dupont Circle this morning and wondered aloud what was going on, I got some incredulous looks. "The iPhone, duh!" hissed one man in a suit.

The new phone, which is cheaper and faster than the previous model, debuted in 22 countries simultaneously, with The New York Times reporting that anxious Apple fans in Germany, Japan and New Zealand are waiting at the edge of their seat.

Headlines were restrained today, with nary an i-pun headline in sight, as opposed to the release of the first iPhone, which was released with great fanfare and iGotta-have-it headlines.
