We Were Wondering The Same Thing

Whatever happened to the bees? That's the important question Brandon Keim at Wired Science is asking. I was wondering the same thing in my piece yesterday. To provide an explanation of the status of the mysterious bee disappearance, Keim points to this article by Alison Benjamin, co-author of the book "A World Without Bees."

In other bee news, a new book tackling the causes and effects of the collapsing bee colonies came out Tuesday which is also worth checking out. "A Spring Without Bees: How Colony Collapse Disorder Has Endangered Our Food Supply," written by Michael Schacker, with a foreward by renowned environmentalist Bill McKibben, scrutinizes the pesticides possibility. After looking at the evidence behind the culprits of viruses, parasites, fungi and stress, Schacker investigates an insecticide (called imidacloprid, or IMD) which many argue could be weakening immune systems in bees, making them particularly vulnerable.
